Bates Motel: Top 5 Reasons to Watch
Apr 9th 2013, 18:02

For those arriving late to the party, there are a number of reasons you should be watching this show. Bates Motel is a modern prequel to the movie Psycho, which gives us a glimpse into what Norman Bates (Freddie Highmore) will eventually become. This show is all kinds of cuckoo. In the Psycho films, we all know Norman is crazy as a loon. He has a strange fascinating with his mother. We all know that. He kept her mummified body in the house. He is sexually frustrated. And lets not forget he kills people. In the show, we get to see Norman and his mother Norma (Vera Farmiga) develop this weird and unnatural bond with each other. What’s also fascinating is the idyllic coastal town White Pine Bay. On the outside it has a Norman Rockwell appearance but underneath the facade there’s corruption, lies and deceit. If you haven’t been watching, perhaps now is the time to check into Bates Motel. Check out Fanhattan’s top five reasons to watch.

1. Death seems to follow the Bates wherever they go.

Norma and Norman Bates

In the first episode, Norman wakes up to find his father bleeding to death in the garage. He begins screaming for Nora and starts pounding like a lunatic on the bathroom door. Following Norman, she sees her husband lying on the ground. What’s unsettling about this scene is Nora’s nonchalant attitude about finding her husband’s bloody body. She sits on the floor holding Norman and says “I’m sorry.” Yet with a slight smirk on her face, she doesn’t seem to be too emotional about finding her husband. Did someone murder him? Did he hurt himself accidentally? Those questions are never answered. In another unsettling moment, shortly after moving into their new home, Norma is brutally raped. Norman happens to walk in on the act and knocks the man out cold. Norma then proceeds to stab the man to death and ask Norman to help her hide the body. You get the strange feeling that disposing of bodies is nothing new to the Bates.

2. Don’t mind the burning body in the town square.

Deputy Zack Shelby

Folks sure like burning people up in White Pine Bay. Norman befriends Bradley Martin (Nicola Peltz), an attractive girl who is smitten with him. On their way to school, an out of control car slams into a tree. Opening the door, Norman discovers its Bradley’s father who has severe burns all over his body. Later on Deputy Zack Shelby (Mike Vogel) explains to Norma how the town takes care of its own. The scene ends with a body on fire in the town square. Its just hanging there. No one seems to be bothered by the fact that its hanging nor are they trying to put the blaze out. There is something strange going on with this town.

3. Sheriff Alex Romero seems too obsessed with Nora.

Norma and Sheriff Alex Romero

In the first episode, Norma is raped by Keith Summers (W. Earl Brown), the former owner of the hotel. Summers is upset that Norma bought his foreclosed home from the bank. Norma ends up escaping with the help of Norman and they hide the body. While disposing of the body late at night, both of them are surprised to see Sheriff Alex Romero (Nestor Carbonell) and Deputy Zack Shelby stop by the motel. Right off the bat, Romero seems to be suspicious and question her about why her son is up late at night. You get the sense that Romero just doesn’t like Nora. In a rude manner, he tells her to put her son to bed. The following day, Romero questions Nora about the disappearance of his friend Summers. Its like he knows she has something to do with his disappearance. Honestly, you would think he would be more worried about a man being set on fire in a car and another man hanging in the town square on fire. Oh and did you notice Romero kind of looks like Anthony Perkins? Just saying.

4. Norman finds a sketchbook full of drawings showing women being tortured and injected.

When Norman and Norma were hiding Summers body in the motel’s bathtub, he finds a sketchbook with drawings of women being tortured. Of course Norman is completely obsessed with the images.  While in class, Norman has a vision of his teacher Miss Watson (Keegan Connor Tracy) tied up like one of the women in the pictures. He starts to have convulsions and pass out. Where did these sketches come from? When his classmate Emma Decody (Olivia Cooke) is visiting his home, she discover the sketchbook. Analyzing the pictures, Emma believes the pictures are of actual women and persuades Norman to go search for the location depicted in the sketchbook. While out in the woods, Emma and Norman stumble across a huge marijuana field and are chased off by men with guns.

5. Deputy Zack Shelby may not be such a good guy.

Deputy Zack Shelby comes across as the boy next door. He’s smitten with Norma and seems very protective. He explains to Norma that the town has an “eye for an eye” attitude when dealing with their problems. Sheriff Romero serves Norma with a search warrant because he still thinks she has something to do with Keith Summers’ disappearance. Norman reveals to Norma that he took Summers utility belt as a souvenir and its no longer in his room. Norma finds out that Deputy Shelby took the belt before Sheriff Romero could discover it. Laying on the bed, Norman has a imaginary conversation with Norma and she tells him to go to Deputy Shelby’s house to get the belt. Once he arrives, Norman goes down to the basement and finds a hidden room. He discovers its one of the women depicted in the sketchbook. Is Norman having another hallucination or is Deputy Shelby the one torturing women?

A&E has renewed Bates Motel for a second season. It airs Monday nights at 10 p.m.
