Bates Motel Season 2 Plot Details
May 28th 2013, 21:45

The first season of Bates Motel was well received and the first episodes had enough viewers for A&E to greenlight a second season right away. Bates Motel Season 2 will begin production later this year and we have new details on where the story is headed.

Executive Producer Carlton Cuse told TV Guide that we’ll be meeting more members of the Bates family next season: “We would be remiss if we didn’t meet some other members of the Bates family… I don’t want to say who, but we are definitely going to learn about their family tree, which has more twisty branches.”

Nestor Carbonell hints that we’ll be learning more about Dylan’s father: “the big question mark is Dylan’s dad… There’s certainly a story to be told there.”

While Norma couldn’t catch a break this season, it sounds like things will be getting better for her, according to Vera Farmiga: ”Norma will find romance next year with someone we haven’t yet met… She sure needs it. Her neediness gives her an urgent desire to touch and kiss Norman, and that need should probably be filled by someone other than her son.”

The second season of Bates Motel should air early in 2014 and we’ll have more details when filming begins later this year.

Another Family Member Being Introduced to Bates Motel
May 28th 2013, 21:41

Bates Motel took a lot of folks off guard when they learned Norman Bates had an older brother.  That brother, Dylan, turned out - arguably - to be one of the show's highlights.  Now, it seems, some more family members are going to be entering the series.

Bates Motel season 1
May 23rd 2013, 14:17

bates motelLast night i finished watching the first season of Bates Motel. I wasn’t best please when i found out it was the last one and there are only 10 episodes in the season. When asking friends if they had they been watching it most people didn’t know what it was. So I’m here to tell you that if you haven’t watched it then get it on your list of things to do.

Bates Motel is a deeper look into Norman Bates as a teenager living with his Mother in their newly acquired motel business. They bought it over to start their lives fresh after the mysterious death of Norman’s Father. Their new location, White Pine Bay, doesn’t seem to live by the rules or any other town, with questionable law men and a couple of less than legal import/exports going on.

The story focuses on Normans different relationships, but mostly with his mother. Their are some majorly creepy scenes with Norman (Freddie Highmore) and his overly attache mother Norma (Vera Farmiga). The acting from these two characters is so incredible. You are literally cringing in some moments.

Contains: sex, drugs, guns, murder, creepyness,

Bring on season 2.

Please.

the conjuring poster Creepy New Poster For James Wan's 'The Conjuring' – Starring Vera Farmiga & Patrick Wilson

Warner Bros. Pictures has unveiled this new UK poster for James Wan's (Insidious, Saw) upcoming horror/thriller, 'The Conjuring.' Drawn from the case files of married demonologists Ed and Lorraine Warren, 'The Conjuring' stars Academy Award nominee Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson as the Warrens. Ron Livingston, Lili Taylor, Joey King, Shanley Caswell, Haley McFarland, Mackenzie Foy, Kyla Deaver and Sterling Jerins also star.

James Wan directs from a screenplay by Chad Hayes and Carey W. Hayes. Reuniting with the director are members of his 'Insidious' creative team, director of photography John Leonetti, editor Kirk Morri and costume designer Kristin M. Burke, and his 'Saw' production designer, Julie Berghoff. 'The Conjuring' is released in cinemas from July 19th in the US and August 2nd in the UK and Ireland.

Before there was Amityville, there was Harrisville. Based on a true story, "The Conjuring" tells the horrifying tale of how world-renowned paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren were called upon to help a family terrorized by a dark presence in a secluded farmhouse. Forced to confront a powerful demonic entity, the Warrens find themselves caught in the most terrifying case of their lives.

The Five Best TV Shows of 2013 (So Far)
May 22nd 2013, 16:14

The Five Best TV Shows of 2013 so far

TV Shows.  There are so many of them each year and I’d say that about 90% of them are garbage.  Sometimes that garbage is rightfully thrown out and other times it lasts for seasons and seasons beyond any rhyme or reason.

2013 isn’t even half over yet, there are still a lot of new shows waiting to premiere this Summer and Fall, but I thought I’d throw together a list of the five new shows that officially have my attention.  As well as one that I really wanted to like, but that ended up being a disappointment.

Click below to find out which shows I picked!

Bates Motel

Bates Motel

"Norma Bates buys a motel on the outskirts of an idyllic coastal town seeking a fresh start with her teenage son, the handsome and shy Norman."

Based upon Psycho obviously, Bates Motel is more of a …re-telling or re-imagining of that world.  It takes the main aspects of the Psycho story, Norman, his mother, the motel, and transforms them into a whole new world.

Even though Norman and his mother are such an iconic pairing in film…you never really learn much about her in the film series.  In fact, you don’t even see her in the (living) flesh until the forth film, Psycho IV: The Beginning.  So the canvas was pretty blank as to what kind of character Norma Bates really was and I must say, Vera Farmiga is fantastic in the role.  She’s made Norma sympathetic yet manipulative, caring yet condescending.  She’s not quite the full blown “mother” character yet, but you can see the seeds of insanity brewing beneath the surface.  Freddy Highmore is also wonderful as Norman Bates and he and Vera make a great pair.

The film never really delved too deeply into the town surrounding  Bates Motel, it didn’t need to, but the series doesn’t have that luxury.  You can’t just focus on the motel every week.  The expanded universe of neighbours and townspeople are a strong addition to the story, as they all have secrets of their own.  Finally…regardless of how entertaining and compelling the series turned out to be…it’s just cool to see the motel again, and that house perched on top of the hill.

Was it renewed?  Yes, for a ten episode second season.

Orphan Black

Orphan Black

“Sarah, a streetwise hustler on the run from a lifetime of bad decisions, witnesses the suicide of a stranger who looks just like her. Sarah assumes her identity, hoping that cleaning out the dead woman’s bank account will solve all of her problems. Instead, the street smart chameleon is thrust headlong into a kaleidoscopic mystery.”

Orphan Black is a show that I knew little about before I decided to watch it.  I just knew it was about clones, but by the end of the first episode I was completely hooked.  Do you remember those X-Files episodes with all the clones?  This has a similar feel, but instead of following a Mulder or Scully character, we’re following one of the clones instead.

Now a HUGE part of what makes this show great is the lead, Tatiana Maslany.  She plays all of the clones, including three who are essentially the main characters.  The entire show would fall apart if she couldn’t pull this off, but pull it off she does.  Each clone has an entirely different look, accent, posture and Tatiana performs all of them magnificently.  Kudos have to be given to her (and the visual effects team) because I’ve never even THOUGHT of the word “split screen” during an episode, their interactions are so seamless and perfect.

Was it renewed?  Yes, for a ten episode second season.

Vikings

Vikings

“Vikings follows the adventures of Ragnar Lothbrok the greatest hero of his age. The series tells the sagas of Ragnar’s band of Viking brothers and his family, as he rises to become King of the Viking tribes. As well as being a fearless warrior, Ragnar embodies the Norse traditions of devotion to the gods, legend has it that he was a direct descendant of Odin, the god of war and warriors.”

I love me some Vikings.  It’s strange how there aren’t more Viking movies out there.  You’d think we’d have some huge Viking movie every year.  Oh well.  In my dreams.

Vikings was not the show I expected it to be, in a good way though.  I was expecting some loud and violent action show and, while it definitely has its loud and violent moments, that’s not what it ended up being.  At times it’s quiet and contemplative and takes its time to develop the characters.  The lead character Ragnar Lothbrok, played by Travis Fimmel, is the one we’re supposed identify with, and we do.  He’s charming and clever yet…he’s also a Viking.  There are several moments in which he makes choices that are cruel and not ones that we can sympathize with, but I’m glad they didn’t decided to sanitize him.  It was a different time, a rougher time, and these were warriors out for conquest.

The show took several interesting turns throughout the first season and by the end, I was very surprised where the paths of these characters had lead.

Was it renewed? Yes, for a ten episode second season.

Banshee

Banshee

“Set in a small town in Pennsylvania Amish country and featuring an enigmatic ex-con posing as a murdered sheriff who imposes his own brand of justice while also cooking up plans that serve his own interests.”

Banshee is violet, sexy, rough, and strange.  It’s definitely not for everyone and the jury is still out on whether it’s “good” or not, but it’s a guilty pleasure for sure.  There’s plenty of sex, nudity, and violence (it does air on Cinemax after all) so if you’re not okay with that, large portions of this show are probably not for you.  Not to say that’s all the show is about, the mysteries and double crosses and intriguing characters are the real focus here.

Antony Starr, an actor I’d neither seen nor heard of before, stars as Lucas Hood and he’s great in addition to being pretty badass in the gruff silent hero sort of way.  My favourite character by far however is Kai Proctor, the ex-amish crime kingpin of Banshee.  He’s played by Ulrich Thomsen and he steals every scene he’s in.

Was it renewed? Yes, for a ten episode second season.

Hannibal

Hannibal

“The series is based on characters and elements appearing in the novel Red Dragon by Thomas Harris and focuses on the budding relationship between FBI special investigator Will Graham and Dr. Hannibal Lecter, a forensic psychiatrist destined to become Graham’s most cunning enemy.”

I saved Hannibal for last because it’s my absolute favourite show of the season.  Every aspect, from the writing to the acting to the cinematography, is top notch.  It’s funny that I was rolling my eyes about this show when I first heard of it.  Who would have thought that it would be the most stylish thought provoking show I’ve seen in the past few years.

As I said before, all the actors do great work.  Hugh Dancy is wonderful as Will Graham, Laurence Fishburne is putting more energy into his role of Jack Crawford than he has for anything in years, and Mads Mikkelsen is absolutely captivating as Hannibal Lector.  He makes the role his own and never once tries to copy Anthony Hopkins iconic portrayal.  Caroline Dhavernas, who starred in creator Bryan Fuller’s sophomore series Wonderfalls, also stars as Dr. Alana Bloom, a psychiatry professor and consultant profiler for the FBI.  With all the darkness and gloom the show oozes, she’s the breath of fresh air.  She seems the most…human or, at the very least, the character with the least to hide.  I’m extremely excited to see where the show takes us for the remainder of the season.

I don’t buy a lot of TV shows on DVD/Blu-ray, outside of a few HBO series, but…I’ll be picking this one up for sure.

Was it renewed?  At the moment, no.  It’s on the bubble but I desperately hope it does get renewed.  I really don’t understand why more people aren’t watching this.

And now…the show I was most disappointed in…

The Following

The Following

“Ryan Hardy attempts to recapture serial killer Joe Carroll following the latter’s escape from prison. Hardy soon discovers that the charismatic Carroll has surrounded himself with a group of like-minded individuals (which he met while teaching and while in prison), and turned them into a cult of fanatical killers.”

Kevin BaconJames Purefoy.  Serial Killers.  You’d think it would be my most favouritist show evah.

Sadly…the first season of The Following ended up being episode after episode of Kevin Bacon scowling and some random character being revealed as a “follower” and then being killed off before we get to know them.  It’s not the worst show in the world, but it was definitely not the dark and psychological story I was anticipating.  The first season finale ended things on a questionable note and I’m not entirely sure what they plan on doing next season.

Was it renewed?  Yes, for a fifteen episode second season.

Bates Motel - Midnight [TV Review]
May 21st 2013, 13:55

After ten episodes of exploring the lives of the Bates family, the finale to season one of Bates Motel is here. While it didn't have a proper set up with last week's episode, the first half of this episode does a lot of making up for that. The latter half is filled with answers and many pay offs. The biggest payoff of them all, the one which this whole series is based around, was also done with great care, really showing off the strengths of the show.

Midnight begins with Norma going to Officer Romero, asking for help in dealing with Abernathy. Although Romero says that he will handle the situation, she can't find it in herself to trust him. With Norman, he has decided to take Emma to the school dance, but seems to still have an interest in Bradley.

There are a number of character payoffs that are very well done, such as one involving Dylan or discovering the reason why Norma has become the woman she is. Probably the biggest character payoff in the show involves Emma, which is very emotional. All season, she has to deal with her feelings for Norman, but she knows that he doesn't care about her the same way. She has been pitied all her life for the disease she has, so to see her finally stand up for herself is very moving and powerful.

Of course, the star of this entire drama is Norman Bates, who is going through a complexity of emotions throughout the episode. They are handled so perfectly and they feel just right. If even one of the beats weren't hit properly, the entire episode may have fallen apart. Another great thing is that they do not go for Norman's happy ending, but instead he gets the reward he deserves. And through this, the biggest payoff of the night happens to the audience, especially those who are the fans of Psycho.

For a finale episode, they spent a lot of time covering their bases, and it seemed confusing as to where they were going for a while, but they managed to pull it off in a very clean fashion. Each major character doesn't necessarily get what they want, but what they deserve to have through their actions. There are also very subtle hints that link us to season two of Bates Motel, which will hopefully be as strong as this season.

Bates Motel - Midnight gets eight stars out of ten.

'Bates Motel' Season Finale Recap: Romero Earns Norma's Trust, Miss Watson Ends Up Dead
May 21st 2013, 04:00

Bates Motel, the AMC drama based off of Alfred Hitchcock thriller Psycho, concluded its first season last night in a finale that leaves Norman's teacher Miss Watson (Keegan Connor Tracy) dead in a pool of her own blood.

In its penultimate episode, Bates Motel saw Norma (Vera Farmiga) threatened by Jake Abernathy (Jere Burns), who was demanding the $150,000 he suspected her of stealing from Keith. This week, Norma seeks the help of Sheriff Romero (Nestor Carbonell), who promises to take care of the situation. Still wary, Norma looks into getting a gun, while Romero's investigation leads him Keith's sister Maggie. He finds out that Abernathy had threatened her just as he had Norma.

After finding the $150,000 in a garage, Romero vows to keep quiet about Maggie's involvement in the prostitution ring that stretches up the east coast if she doesn't talk about his investigation. Romero then pulls up in his car to meet with Abernathy, bringing along the bag of cash. Abernathy asks for Norma, who had hidden behind a stack of boxes once she heard Romero approaching. Romero cuts him off, offering to let it slide if he gives him 50% of the profits before shooting him dead. Coolly, Romero then shifts his gaze over to where Norma was hiding, and says, "You can go home now, Norma. I said trust me."

Meanwhile, Norman (Freddie Highmore) goes into Miss Watson's office to let her know that he doesn't want to publish his story, only to walk in on his teacher engaging in a heated phone conversation with some guy named Eric. After promising Miss Watson that he won't repeat what he heard, he's forced to deal with Bradley's (Nicola Peltz) rejection. Ultimately, he comes around to the idea of bringing Emma (Olivia Cooke) to the dance, but the arrangement goes far from smoothly.

Just before Norman is about to leave for the dance, Norma decides it's a good time to have an intense heart-to-heart. She reveals to her teenage son that she was raped by her brother from the time she was 13 until he moved out of the house. So, with that sendoff, Norman ends up being a pretty distant date – causing Emma to storm off when she repeatedly catches him staring in the direction of Bradley. He's not without company for long though, as Bradley's boyfriend then marches over and punches him square in the face.

After the blow to the head, Norman begins to walk home when he's spotted by Miss Watson who offers to give him a ride. Instead of taking him directly back to Bates Motel, she brings him to her home to clean up his injuries and change. While she's changing, Norman watches and begins to hallucinate that his mother is telling him that Miss Watson is trying to seduce him. Next thing you know, Norman is sprinting back home through the rain, arriving at the house the same time as his mother.

The final scene shifts back to Miss Watson's apartment, where she lies dead on the floor with her throat slit. Was it Norman? Or, could it have been Eric? If Norman did it, does he even remember? Bates Motel will return with an answer and its second season in 2014.

'Bates Motel' finale recap: Season 1 episode 10 'Midnight' - Norman goes psycho
May 21st 2013, 06:47

It had to happen sooner or later: Norman Bates went full psycho in the "Bates Motel" Season 1 finale, "Midnight."At least, we think he did. We didn't actually see the murder of Miss Watson (Keegan Connor Tracy), but we saw enough to draw our own conclusions: She brought Norman back to her house, went into her bedroom to change her clothes and Norman saw a vision of Norma scolding the teacher for being a very naughty woman. Norman slipped into one of his angry rages, and the next thing he knew he was running through the rainy streets trying to get home as soon as possible. With Norma arriving home from her almost equally eventful night out, the inseparable mother and son retire to their creepy cocoon of a house. Now, the question is -- if Norman really did kill Miss Watson -- does he become a suspect? Or is there enough evidence to point elsewhere...
